Flotation Device pays its respects to the late Ingram Marshall, revisits an absorbing Miles Davis track recorded exactly 50 years ago, and samples a diverse batch of new releases from China, Canada, Germany, Italy and—naturally—the US. Old favorites Lao Dan, Tashi Dorji, Angelica Sanchez and Gordon Grdina head the docket, along with less familiar voices like Gianluca Verlingieri, Eckard Koltermann and the late Heinz Winbeck. We preview a couple of unreleased Shelley Hirsch tracks, and reprise a recent duet by Fred Frith and Laurie Anderson that we didn’t have time for during Anderson’s own 75th birthday tribute last week (and which showcases her more avant-garde, violin-centric side).
