One week after our annual Mother's Day extravaganza with Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, we turn our attention to Zappa's ongoing influence on contemporary music, with new albums by John Zorn (and his Simulacrum Trio), Gabriel Zucker and Wolfgang Mitterer that revel in their juxtapositions of high and low art, and their montage-oriented aesthetic of “cinema for the ears”. Also on the docket are the latest symphony by Philip Glass, new improvised and fixed-media tracks from China, Japan, Peru, New York and the Northwest, and a look back 50 years at the debut of landmark works by George Russell (featuring Bill Evans) and George Rochberg (his controversial Third String Quartet, for which our host Michael Schell offers a candid appraisal).
