Flotation Device salutes Wolfgang Rihm at 70, Tristan Murail at 75, the late Leroy Jenkins at 90, and Space Is the Place at 50. Rihm is represented by premiere recordings of an austere Stabat Mater setting and a spiky piano concertino, while Murail comes to us via Klangforum Wien’s recent recording of a work inspired by one of Giacinto Scelsi’s unused ondiola improvisations. Jenkins’ birthday coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Revolutionary Ensemble’s debut recording, which amply demonstrates how he pioneered the violin as a vehicle for free jazz. As for Sun Ra, we compare a prominent Marshall Allen solo recorded for the oddball 1972 sci-fi/blaxpolitation flick with his nonagenarian contributions to a new album by some young Arkestra members.
