Flotation Device celebrates the 50th anniversary of Julius Hemphill’s landmark (and debut) album Dogon A.D. with four different interpretations of its iconic title tune. We trace the influence of Hemphill—and Lennie Tristano (via an early and newly unearthed free track)—on contemporary improvisation practice with help from Mark Feldman, Timothy Daisy, Vijay Iyer, Steph Richards, Broken Shadows and the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra.
We also explore new computer music by John Bischoff, new electronic music from Japan, new chamber music by Seattle's own Melia Watras, and the premiere recording of an important orchestral work by Wolfgang Rihm. Creative and improvised music from the Northwest and around the world, with host Michael Schell.
