Flotation Device 2021-11-21 - Iyer, Chatham, Tazartès

Avatar

A new Flotation Device podcast showcases a fine batch of radical new releases. Wadada Leo Smith appears in an unusually lyrical mood with Jack DeJohnette and Vijay Iyer (who's also represented by a Botticelli-inspired solo cello piece). The late Ghédalia Tazartès appears in a not-so-lyrical mood with Rhys Chatham via a new recording that captures one of his very last performances. Nastasia Khrushcheva melds Vivaldi with postminimalism, while harpsichordist Luca Quintavalle offers premiere recordings of works by Ennio Morricone (in his avant-garde avatar) and Jacopo Baboni Schilingi (who writes his compositions on nude models rather than manuscript paper).

We’ve also got Joe McPhee with the Flow Trio, quirky avant-rock from Crazy Doberman, and a pair of new voices from Romania and the UK offering music about birds and beasts. Creative and improvised music from the Northwest and around the world with host Michael Schell.
