Curated by Gene Coleman, "the program covers a diverse region in which many uses of improvisation are explored. In some cases, improvisation is used by a composer to open up a work to possibilities that would be difficult to realize through more traditional means; in others, the music is created by the musicians
on the spot, with little composition involved. The connection between the groups can be seen as relating to ''classical music" more than any other genre. Improvisation in this context is individual or collective action within a complex structure or creative "recall" of one's musical environment. This goes beyond the context of improvisation in most other genres."
