Formaldehyde

Formaldehyde

Avatar

Look lively this week, because we're talking about preserving dead things! We're talkin' formaldehyde.

Fun fact: Formaldehyde comes from form- and -aldehyde
An aldehyde is what we call any carbon molecule with a double-bonded oxygen on its end
Form- is the prefix we often give to organic molecules with one carbon, because:
Formic acid has one carbon
We named formic acid that because ants make formic acid and
Formica is latin for "ant"

All of which serves as a neat reminder that chemistry naming is real dumb
