Flatliners 2

On March 2, 2002, I was tapped to open the famed Technoflash club in Valladolid, Spain. In my posting of the set back then: “I had a double gig that night, so I had to play early to a thin crowd. As a result I played my version of ‘opening techno.’ Hypnotic, slow techno. No flashy tricks, no dumb vocal stabs, just long, smooth blends focusing on the tracks, the DJ fading into the background.”

I called the mix “Flatliners.”

History rhymes more than it repeats, and six months shy of 25 years later, on September 5, 2026, I was asked to open Detroit’s newest warehouse venue called The Vault 313. My ethos on opening techno hasn’t changed; only the sounds updated. As my performance went on, I couldn’t help but reflect on the similarities.

Here, then, is the recording of that set, which naturally must be called “Flatliners 2.”
