"Initialise" - verb: to set (variables, counters, switches, etc.) to their starting values at the beginning of a program or subprogram.
The first set of a club night, or "warmup" set, is one of greater importance than most give thought to. It has to create the 'initial' mood, as well as set the listeners to their 'starting values' -- a state where the break between silence and the music to come can easily transition and proceed.
The first hour or so of such nights must take much into consideration. Fewer listeners, of course, but among them tend to be early birds who prefer a deeper, more clinical sounding mix that they can enjoy with feet still and eyes closed. During this time the DJ is presenting more of a showcase than a performance. They trade big drops and crowd energy for smooth mixing and gently evolving atmospheres: There's plenty of time for the former later on in the evening.
The warmup set is an underrated art, and its magic is usually taken for granted.
