After years of spinning hip hop and indie dance sets at mainstay venues throughout Chicago, DJ LA*Jesus (aka Nate Euhus) all but retired his Jesuswear when he was hired as resident DJ at 694 Wine & Spirits (where he can still be found spinning house, hip hop, indie and disco three nights a week). But recently, Euhus felt it time to revive the performance element of his shows. On Dec. 22, 2011, he debuted new visual elements, such an updated costume that features a new and improved “crown of thorns” (made of LED Christmas lights) and a custom “pulpit”, dubbing it his Second Coming.
“I started out as a performer: LA*Jesus began as a Halloween costume that I kept wearing out to shows. Before I knew it, I was onstage with The Flaming Lips (LA*J made a name for himself in the early '00s dancing onstage with the band). ‘People love watching you,’ Wayne (Coyne, the band’s singer) once told me, and I want to get back on stage, and bring that visual entertainment element back into my shows."
