On May 30, 2020, as part of the #YearOfChicagoMusic, I recorded this DJ set live at Navy Pier in an attempt to document a span of Chicago’s Black music history, from some of the earliest jazz, blues, and gospel, through soul, house, footwork, and new hip-hop/R&B.
Black music defines the American canon and in one form or another has dominated global popular music for 100 years. In particular, the sounds of Chicago jazz, blues, and gospel designed by those who fled north to escape the southern racial terror of Jim Crow helped lay the groundwork for what would become the century's most recognizable U.S. global export: rock‘n’roll.
Then in the late ‘80s, Chicago house music became the sound of the U.K. rave scene, and once again Black Chicago sounds were re-exported around the world. Today it continues. Read more: https://medium.com/mood-bling/black-music-in-chicago-100-years-of-innovation-influence-fe7404f71f15
