the in between
by cosmokra
I love the feeling of falling asleep. I try to linger in that liminal space if i can. Last night as I was drifting off, I became aware of being in that middle section. The word purgatory comes to mind, but I just looked up the official definition(s) and they're a little contradictory. In the Roman Catholic sense, purgatory is a place of suffering for sinners to atone before entering heaven. However the original latin definition of purgatory speaks of cleansing and purifying. They're both saying the same thing but in different flavors. I prefer to see purgatory as an in-between space, that is inherently pure and safe, and welcomes us into sleep which also cleanses and purifies the brain and body as kind of its primary mission.
So as I was saying, sometimes I am lucky enough to be cognizant in the in-between. It comes fast. When I have awareness, it feels like I'm getting on a roller coaster. Here we go. I wonder what's going to happen. A few thoughts came to my mind in that moment. First, I had the intention of trying to communicate with a specific person. I wanted to to meet or speak in the dream realm. I also had the sensation of flying up to an overlook and rounding the top, cresting up to an outstanding view. This was about the moment I believe I fell asleep. It was awesome. This must be close to what dying feels like. I am very curious about that.
I don't think the in-between ever ends. I think we just cycle in and out of it. Sometimes we're in a waiting room and there's a million doors and we aren't even sure what doctor we're supposed to be seeing or at what time.
I love sleeping and dreaming and thinking about how waking life is almost like sleeping and dreaming but just a little bit different. I've been dreaming about the same thing recently. I saw on tiktok that some people have a shared dream location called Mall World. This makes me laugh. A multi-level mindscape that many people claim to visit in their dreams. There are whole Reddit threads dedicated to understanding and decoding Mall World. I want to visit. I wonder what I would see there.
I think this week's show will have some songs about dreaming. ~*~*~*~
