#79 - Desire Lines

«They say when you dream you are innocent, so its there that you can have your fun, but with dreams there can be no finishing, cause they come between heart and tongue.» ~ Anomoanon; Heart & Tongue
Sitting in front of a second floor windows overlooking the old bay of Marseille, I was asked if, at the age of 15, I could have imagined myself there. Quite frankly, 26 years ago I could hardly imagine turning eighteen, let alone watching the sunset on Europe's oldest port, or tasting an array of fine eau-de-vie in Kayserberg, or riding a train along the scenic banks of the Zürichsee. Nor could I imagine hating it.
Well, the latter, that is - and not exactly that, either. This trip has been more than beautiful, amd I've found that I love France more than expected. We have been exploring from the south up to the Alsace; and before I'm home I will be back in that country again to catch a music festival in Aix-Les-Bains. However, this blessed trip all fell apart as soon as we crossed the border into Switzerland.
Had I done my homework, I would have known that Switzerland sits vexingly outside of the EU - a fact that my phone service provider was quick to inform me of, when our astounding €7/mb roaming tariffs passively blew to €50, where they capped our service and shut it off. Who needs data when you're traveling anyway, right? Another fact I failed to account for was the surreal cost of things here: not only is the local currency stronger than the euro, but things cost 3x more for no reason other than they can demand payment and people comply.
Luckily we sought shelter outside Zürich, which quickly took a place in my pantheon on cities I despise, but unfortunately our expensive room is nestled in a party hostel where a simply wretched cover band has been desecrating the sacred night with their caterwauling and bad taste.
Less to say, my time in Switzerland is a challenge. Waiting out this torturous party, (which is inescapable no matter where you position yourself in this hotel) has the benefit of allowing me a moment to tap out these notes and complete my clerical duties to the oasis. Predictably late, but complete nonetheless.
Wishing everyone adventures well lubricated with fine wine and brandy as we endure the brutality of summer, which continues undeterred.
