Jaimeo Brown interview

Avatar

New York based drummer Jaimeo Brown was the toast of the gathered jazz writers and industry high rollers at JazzAhead earlier this year with performances of his Motema Records debut 'Transcendence'. As well as beautiful Carnatic Indian influences his work celebrates the work songs and spirituals of an Alabama community called the Gee's Bend Quilters. Jaimeo's music is built around field recordings in a setting of contemporary free jazz. His acclaimed trio features Chris Sholar on guitar, who has worked with hip hop's Jay Z, Q-Tip and more and JD Allen on saxophone. During his recent visit to London Jaimeo took time out to talk to Chris Philips.

this is a correct direction for jazz music,so that it retains its transcendant, and contemporary context. It incorporates the early music inherently responsible for the birth and formation of jazz,as well as elements of swing, bebop, and free-jazz.I knew Jaimeo, his Sister, and parents when we were all much younger, and still call his talented Father,Dartanyan, my great, and true, friend,Jaimeo has the advantage of having two beautiful musicians as parents, but this music is ALL HIS,and a gift to all of us.Cheers, Mr. Jaimeo!
