In Robert Masters' book "Emotional Intimacy," he brilliantly describes the pivotal difference between feelings and emotions. "Feeling means the registering of sensation... an innate noncognitive evaluative sensing that's at the very core of emotion." He then goes on to explain how "emotion is the dramatization of feeling"... the way in which we contextualize sensations based on past experiences. "Feelings often burst forth before thoughts have even formed." Feeling is reactive, instinctual, and preverbal. It is only when the mind seeks to contextualize our sensations that emotional conditioning arises and shapes our perceptions in any given situation.
In our dance we have an opportunity to consciously differentiate... exploring our feelings AND the emotional context that arises as a result. Allow your feelings to move through your physicality, and be willing to witness your emotions without buying heavily into the past or present story lines that rise up to meet your dance.
