The very first mix I made with a computer using Cool Edit Pro and a bunch of music files. No automatic beat grid detection or anything it was all done by measuring time of a 16 beat sample, calculating a percentage of how long to stretch the next track so that the beats would match using a calculator. Tweaking the to get the beats to match were done by deleting small sections of sound so that the beats would line up. Today's DAW software make such tasks easier as it's all automatically detected and matched.
