BBC Micro and ZX81 (which I had) displayed a command prompt. You were in the BASIC programming shell. There was no GUI. Sure, with today's PCs people can start programming Javascript or whatever, but it's not so immediately obvious how to do this. (RaspberryPi may change this) Perhaps what's needed is a simple app for Windows/Mac/Linux that makes it easy to get started, to have this bundled with those OSs as standard, to ensure that users know its there and to provide a hard-copy reference book. Python does a good job at this... make it a standard feature.
