Having been in the music industry for well over a decade, Tiffany Calver is one of the most recognisable DJs, broadcasters and personalities in the UK. With over 10 years in the game, she went from music journalism to becoming the host of her very own radio show ‘The Tiffany Calver Show’ on BBC Radio 1Xtra, a post she recently left. This was after having made history when she became the first woman to host Radio 1’s ‘Rap Show.’ She also throws parties and releases records under the No Requests banner and has DJ’d for the likes of Jay-Z, Beyonce and Drake. For Women’s History Month, we asked Tiffany Calver to share her top three Spotlights, read on for her selections.
Keyrah
Birmingham-born, London-based DJ Keyrah is doing big things. Her mixes take on an eclectic style and take full form through her club night MISC, an arena for experimentation and elite vibes. She’s also very busy on the radio circuit and creates playlists that serve as windows into her thrilling world.
“Keyrah is somebody who completely embodies what it means to be a good DJ,” Tiffany says. “She is well educated, knows her music very well and her range is ridiculous.I think it’s so important to have DJs in this new generation who don’t just rely on bangers or big hits. She’s somebody who takes her time, builds a set, takes people on a journey and is kind of educating the new dance floors on how to experience true DJ sets. I absolutely love her.”
G33
One fourth of the fantastic collective Girls Don’t Sync, G33 is a titan in her own right. The South London DJ traces club music with style in her sets and always stands out thanks to her killer selections. Everything from Techno and Grime to Broken Beat is on show whenever she spins, bringing infectious energy to the dance. “As an individual DJ, G33 might be one of the only DJs I might bid for her USB at auction, if it ever went up,” Tiffany exclaims. “There isn’t one miss in any of her DJ sets. I think she could go toe to toe with any DJ. MCs should be terrified of her, because how you won’t mess up your lyrics when she mixes in a tune, I don’t know!”
Malix
Sister DJ duo Malix are the gift that keeps giving. They’re DJs and producers pushing out House vibrations to the world. Their attention to detail is second to none, and their ability to read crowds and serve their excitement has taken them to festival stages, club nights and beyond.
“I absolutely love everything Malix is doing for House music and just bringing anything with great drums,” Tiffany says. “I remember the first time I saw them years and years and years ago. Me and my friend were having drinks and they were DJing at this place, and we actually stopped speaking to be like, who was that? Because they were that good. So to see where they’ve taken it in a few years, and how they continue to grow as they’re learning and going more into this world of dance music, I think it’s just been chef’s kiss.”
