Humans, not algorithms, are the best guides for music discovery. That’s why we built a platform for people who love music. We’ve been listening to feedback, which told us you want better recommendations. So we thought, why not let everyone here on the platform put you onto the DJs they love with a new feature?
Spotlights allows you to highlight the creators you admire and share them via your profile. You’ll be helping your followers discover great mixes and helping the creators get heard.
How to get started
On the For You Page, we’ve pulled your favorite profiles based on your listening history. From there, you’ll be invited to select up to 10 creators to spotlight. We encourage you to leave a personalised note about them and select three genres they play that you love for others to see.
These recommendations will then sit on your profile, so people know what you’re about. You can champion a legend or support an underdog. You could honour a friend or a distant fascination. Spotlights are yours to shine.
The people-powered discovery engine
Algorithms have taken the disco out of music discovery. The party-like experience that is enjoying music together doesn’t quite happen with spoon-feeding optimisation engines.
When you spotlight someone, they’ll be notified by email and your followers will receive a notification that encourages them to follow your spotlights in one click. This may be your followers’ first time seeing the feature, so there’s a high chance they might end up spotlighting you.
It creates a symbiotic network of peer-to-peer recommendations, which humanises music discovery across the platform. As the people-powered recommendation network grows, you’ll start to see underground creators flourish and much more variety in feeds from your peers’ recommendations.
People across the platform have already begun using the feature, with many reporting they’re getting an influx of new followers. Some are enjoying the feature so much they’ve vowed to update their spotlights to reflect their favourites not just once a month, but get this, every day!
This is a chance for you to shine a light on smaller creators, just like Mol or Nick Francis has decided to do. Or to thank other profiles that have helped get where they are today, like Lefto Early Bird, who spotlighted Kiosk Radio.
Spotlight your favorite creators now to start an explosive chain reaction of musical proportions, and you’ll start getting great recommendations from those you follow in no time.
