NTS resident Edna Martinez names the people and platforms that inspire her, powered by our new recommendation feature, Spotlights.

Edna Martinez Spotlights

If you want to show some love to DJs and radio stations you feel deserve more recognition,  we’ve released a feature called Spotlights. It allows you to highlight the creators you follow and share them on your profile. You can select up to 10 profiles via your For You Page and even leave a personalised note about why you’re into them. Your ringing endorsement then reaches your followers, allowing them to discover new mixes and creators while helping your favourites gain more exposure. We’re excited to dig into your recommendations!

Born in Colombia and based in Berlin, Edna Martinez routes the Caribbean, Africa and the Arabic world through music. With shows for NTS and Palestinian station Radio Alhara, she channels the sounds and stories of global communities while entertaining us with everything from Ethio-Jazz to sonics from Colombia’s Picó sound system culture. We asked Edna to share her top three Spotlights, read on for her selections.

Gayance

Montreal-born Haitian-Canadian artist and DJ Gayance makes Jazz-kissed House music with a Brazilian flair. The result is so good that you’ll want to make out with your crush. Her credentials are weighty, having been nominated for the prestigious Polaris Music Prize – the Canadian equivalent of the Mercury Prize – as well as performing sets at Dekmantel, Lowlands and the Montreux Jazz Festival. “Gayance showcases electronic innovation as part of a Haitian and Afro-diasporic continuity,” Edna says. So, if you’re feeling like dancing, Gayance is your girl!

Radio Alhara

Since its launch in March 2020, Radio Alhara has become a pivotal source of entertainment and relief. Politically charged as well as musically rich, its programming lends itself to the many conflicts that have consumed the Arabic world. But not just that. Broadcasts are often spiritual events, building bridges and common ground between communities through music, talk shows and more. With a show on Alhara, Edna is more than invested. “Radio Alhara is a Palestinian radio station broadcasting from and beyond this territory,” she says. “It offers sound with political and cultural content in dialogue with global communities.”

Fly Machine Sessions

Bringing experimental music to the forefront, Fly Machine Sessions pushes boundaries. Based in South Africa, the platform is a home for the country’s most forward-thinking musicians and producers, reinventing what underground music can sound like. From Psychedelic Rock and Acid Jazz to Hiphoptronica and Tropical Bass, Fly Machine Sessions leaves no stone unturned in exploring music’s audiovisual depths. “Fly Machine Sessions is a visual and sonic experimental space with its own unique language,” Edna shares. “These are distinct projects connected by vision, context, and an honest way of understanding the present.”
