Technological Guilt Tripping

The language learning app, Duolingo, have made guilt-tripping an artform with their cartoon owl mascot, Duo. If you miss a week of lessons, the app sends you an email with an animated crying version of Duo. Why is technology guilt-tripping us so effective?
