In conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall rebellion and Aurora's “No Matter What Sign You Are” film program, we present this mix of songs that were among the most popular in the Stonewall’s jukebox at the time of the infamous police raid that sparked days of resistance and a half century of LGBTQ pride and protest.
The Greenwich Village "private club" was a safe space for diverse patrons to drink, dance, and be themselves. At the center of this secret universe was its jukebox, featuring a continually updated mix of the latest Motown hits and other soul, rock, and lounge songs of the time. This mix represents a sliver of its soundtrack the week leading up to the riots, and is bookended by the A and B-sides of the #1 record in the jukebox–two prescient songs by Diana Ross & The Supremes calling alternately for love beyond categories and the rise of a new generation.
