What’s so funny about this? With this idiom we have a slight case of overkill. First of all these soldiers are toting automatic weapons packing a lot of firepower, as they say. That means these were powerful weapons which can shoot many bullets per second and cut down a whole bunch of enemy soldiers. The only trouble is there are no enemy soldiers here, just a tornado. Now, a tornado is no light zephyr or breeze. It’s an incredibly powerful windstorm of concentrated energy that can destroy anything in its path, including tanks, automatic weapons and certainly these two soldiers. Here’s the problem - the words of this idiom “shoot” the breeze” do not correspond to the actions of the characters, namely the soldiers and the tornado. Normally, when you “shoot the breeze” you’re having a light conversation about nothing special; it’s what they call small talk, or sometimes schmoozing.
