Why is it that when someone tells you that there are one billion stars in the universe you believe them, but if they tell you there is wet paint you have to touch it to check?

What’s so funny about this? This joke is kind of an old school one liner. There were many comedians in the 70’s & 80’s who had this kind of routine where they would talk about everyday, mundane things and events and point out how irrational human behavior can be about them. I think George Carlin was the master of this kind of joke. In this joke we have two very common, almost universal elements, stars and paint. Stars have been around for a long time, longer than the human race, longer than the planet earth, solar system and even the Milky Way galaxy. In fact there is probably nothing older in the universe. By comparison, paint can’t even be compared. Even if we trace it back to early humans about 100,000 years ago, that’s less than the blink of an eye compared to the beginning of the universe.
