What’s so funny about this? This little joke has a violent undertone to it. And I was wondering whether or not to illustrate it in the cartoon. As you can see, I decided not to, so I guess that makes the explanation even more important. At first glance we see a couple sitting in a restaurant or lounge, having a drink. The woman is relaxed and cool, as is the waiter. But the guy’s eyes tell us that something is up. It looks like the man and woman are talking about their relationship. It’s possible she’s breaking up with him or he’s breaking up with her, though the former is more likely. When couples break up there are some standard things that they say, such as “I need more space” or “It’s not you, it’s me”, stuff like that. In this case she might have initially said, “I don’t want to hurt you”, but of course, if the guy is still in love with her he will feel hurt. He might say this or just show it by his expression.
