RECTITUDE

Word of the day: Rectitude (noun), the formal dignified bearing adopted by proctologists.

What’s so funny about this? It’s always good to learn new words and expand your vocabulary. There’s a local radio station where I live that has this very feature called “word of the day” where the announcer says she wants the listeners to use the new words in their everyday conversations. But then she’ll come up with a word like “syzygy” or some other word that no one uses in daily conversation, including, I’m sure, the announcer. But the word I’m teaching you today is “rectitude” which usually means to behave in a highly moralistic or righteous way. But we’re going to create a neologism with this word by giving it a new meaning. By taking certain characteristics of a word’s sound or spelling, it’s possible to create a previously unused definition, usually a joke. In the case of “rectitude”, the first five letters conjures up the word “rectum” which means the lowest part of the human lower intest
