What’s so funny about this? I debated how to best format this joke. I think it’s best if it’s told without the punch line, allowing the listener to not only fill in the obvious missing word but then to realize the pun. I also thought of doing it visually, but since this podcast is mostly for English language learners, I realized that this might be asking too much. That is why you see the whole joke written out. The joke starts out as if it were a riddle, and it kind of is. But if you remember what your science books were like when you were in school, then you know that often a chapter or a new section would begin with a so-called scientific question. Can’t you just visualize your old science teacher asking the class how to tell the sex of an ant. Of course, if it’s a middle school or junior high school class of 11 and 12 year olds, all you’ll get for a response is a bunch of giggles, because the mere mention of the word “sex” is enough to seriously destabilize an 11 year ol boy or girl
