Once upon a time there were two little skunks named "In" and "Out." They lived in a hollow tree with their mother. Sometimes In and Out played outside, but other times they played inside. One day In was out and Out was in. Mother skunk told Out to go out and bring In in. So Out went out and in a few minutes he came in with In. "My my, Out," she said, "How did you find In so quickly?" Out just smiled and said, "Instinct."

What’s so funny about this? This is actually a very old joke. At least I remember hearing it when I was a kid, and that was a LONG time ago. Nevertheless, it’s timeless because the pun is completely valid and because it’s not based on technology. Furthermore I don’t believe skunks are on any endangered species list so they are still very much with us in the world. What’s particularly fun about this joke is that besides the punch line, it plays with the prepositions, “in” and “out” using them as proper names and of course as prepositions too, deliberately causing lot
