Saul was taking an oral exam in his ESL class. He was asked to spell "cultivate," and he spelled it correctly. He was then asked to use the word in a sentence, "Last vinter on a very cold day, I vas vaiting for a bus, but it vas too cultivate, so I took the subvay home."

What’s so funny about this? I love this joke. It’s got all the elements I like. It’s ethnic, It’s ESL. It uses an accent, AND it has a brilliant pun. What could be better? Saul is kind of an “Everyman” or maybe an Everystudent. He’s learning English and he’s mastered a good bit of it, except maybe his pronunciation could use a little more work. Though, most likely he’ll have the accent for the rest of his life. And it’s not a terrible thing if he does. Saul is even a bit of a wise guy, or maybe I should use that older term, “weisenheimer”.
