What’s so funny about this? Mostly it’s just fun to say. POKEMON. Yes, it’s a Japanese video and arcade game but the pronunciation of the last syllable “mon” sounds just like the way Jamaicans say “man”. There are two previous syllables as well, so p-o-k-e is not pronounced the way the regular English word would be. Instead it’s po-kee”. There’s something about that “ee” sound that English uses as a diminutive that creates the humor, in my opinion, at least. This sound is usually spelled with the letter Y and used as a suffix, as in my first name, for example. My full first name is Andreas, but adding the Y to the first syllable, gives it a little kid quality, as it becomes Andy. This works for male and female names, e.g., Betty, Nancy, Danny, Billy, etc. Poke is not a proper noun, of course, but still the ee sound has an effect.
