What’s so funny about this? Today we’re dealing with the idiom, “Hit the sack”. As with all idioms it has a literal and an idiomatic or metaphoric meaning. The word “sack” is actually a euphemism for “bed”. So the idiomatic meaning is “Go to bed”. Of course, since our culture is obsessed with sex, going to bed implies doing the things one does in a bed. These include, but are not limited to, sleeping, having sex, eating crackers or listening to the radio under the covers. Oh, and also playing trampoline. As you can see a bed is a very useful place where lots of activities can occur. OK, I’ll admit that mostly it’s about sex and sleeping. They say we spend a third of our lives in the sack, or bed, so it’s a pretty important place. But there is a literal meaning to “hit the sack” as well.
