What’s so funny about this? This joke just begs for more puns about rigging contracts instead of sails, telling crude jokes and having Popeye tell us he’ll return by saying “oil be back.” But I’m going to skip all of those and just concentrate on the irony of the photo. You’ve got to admit it IS pretty ironic to see a beautiful sailboat sailing by an oil rig on pristine blue waters. I guess it’s supposed to make us feel all warm inside and associate the oil rig with clean wind energy which powers the sails. It’s all bogus marketing. The fact is that it this very oil rig which is destroying plant and animal life in the oceans by creating untold and irreparable damage to the ocean floor in man’s incessant greed for fuel and money. Meanwhile the boat just goes sailing along on its merry way, oblivious to the danger and reality of the oil drilling on the rig.
