What’s so funny about this? This joke is one of those quotes that not only make you laugh but also shake your head in agreement at how true it is. When John Glenn the famous astronaut said it, he was already back from his trip so he could say it in retrospect and make a great joke out of it. But if and when this thought really did occur to him, I don’t think he was laughing. More than likely it could have caused him to piss in his pants, or spacesuit, as he pondered the reality of the idea. Planned obsolescence is an important part of our consumer economy. Almost everything is designed to break down sooner than later so that you will have to go out and buy either replacement parts or a whole new item. This is true for car/car parts, computers, appliances, toys, almost any consumable item. What about construction and so-called durable goods, like houses, office buildings and oh yeah space ships? These things are all supposed to be built to last. But the most important vocabulary phrase
