THE MONK KEPT GROWING OUT OF HIS GARMENTS AND WAS CONTINUALLY BEING ISSUED LARGER ONES. EVENTUALLY HE WAS TAKEN OFF KITCHEN DUTY "FOR SPIRITUAL REASONS" BECAUSE IT WAS JUST FEEDING HIS BAD HABITS.
What’s so funny about this? It must be tough to be a monk. You have to give up worldly pleasures and comforts. No sex, no fancy clothes, no nifty toys, no money. You have to live communally, that is with a group of other monks in a place called a monastery. When not praying or meditating, you have to share the housework. But as this joke shows there are a few pleasures some monks might indulge in. The monk in the joke had kitchen duty. I guess he was responsible for cooking and cleaning up in the kitchen. But apparently the job led to some serious temptations. Monks have no money or clothes of their own. They wear hooded robes called “habits”. The monk in question kept growing out of his robe because he was getting too fat from overeating his own cooking. This happened several times
