What’s so funny about this? This joke started out as a locker room discussion about a guy who had just stopped dying his beard black. I’d commented that he now looked a bit like Colonel Sanders, the Kentucky Fried Chicken guy. This morphed to talking about beards in general and whether they should be short and trim which is today’s style or long and unkempt, like the cartoon character, Mr. Natural, or like band members of ZZ Top, or perhaps the cast of the TV reality program, Duck Dynasty. If none of these references make sense to you, don’t worry about it. They are not essential to understanding today’s little joke. It’s just the back story. The point is that one of the Duck Dynasty guys was stopped by a cop on the street for some reason or another. Maybe the cop was a fan of the show and recognized him, but more than likely it’s because these guys dress in raggedy old clothes and their beards are REALLY long.
