What’s so funny about this? This joke works much better with the visual, because then you clearly see what the egg roll. Or should I say role, is. It’s Humpty Dumpty, which is plain to see from the photo. It’s a very clever photo by the way since only the guy’s head and face are made up. But let’s look closer at the puns involved here. First in the set-up we learn that the speaker was at an audition. This is an event where people interested in acting come to try out for parts or roles in an upcoming play, or theatrical production. We have no idea what the play is going to be, only that the speaker attended the audition, presumably to try out by reading lines from the play for different parts or roles. Note the spelling of “role” here is r-o-l-e. Next we learn that the speaker and several other people from the audition went out to eat together to a Chinese restaurant. Who exactly was there?
