What’s so funny about this? This is one of those quasi-spoonerisms that just happened to pop into my head one day. Instead of flipping the initial sounds, it switches the prefix “un” from one word to another. I jotted it down and completely forgot about it. Months later I discovered the scrap of paper on my desk and so here it is today. I honestly don’t remember what event triggered it, but it doesn’t really matter, does it? The first part of the joke is a very common phrase that means no effort will be spared in looking for something that’s been lost. In the case of the cartoon, what has been lost is a guy’s dope. “Dope” in this case does not mean stupid. It’s a generic slang expression referring to drugs. In case you’re interested “dope” is an American English word dating back to the early 19th century. It’s derived from “doop” and both words meant a thick dipping sauce.
