What’s so funny about this? So exactly what is a taste bud? Here’s what the dictionary says: Any of the clusters of bulbous nerve endings on the tongue and in the lining of the mouth that provide the sense of taste. In case you’re not certain, “bulbous” means round. All you have to do is look at the underside of your tongue and you can see your own taste buds. Few things are more important than eating but the food we eat has to have good taste too and that’s where the taste buds come in. Why are they called “buds”? It’s because they are round in shape, a lot like the round buds of a flowering plant before the flowers bloom. OK, so this is kind of interesting but where’s the joke? It’s in the word “bud” which also happens to be short for “buddy” meaning “pal”, or “friend”. Sometimes you hear a person referring to another person as their best “bud”.
