What’s so funny about this? First of all, let me say that I LOVE this photo. There is something very endearing about a donkey’s face. It’s unfortunate that the word “ass” is a synonym for “donkey.” As you know, in American English “ass” also means backside which in British English is “arse,” which, btw is not a synonym for donkey. Donkeys are known to be stubborn animals. If they don’t want to move for some reason, they’re not going to move. You can’t pull them, you can’t push them. You can’t beat them. Maybe you can offer them a carrot, but I don’t really know about that stuff. “Ass” is an insult in English and it usually means “jerk” or “dope” or “stupid fool”. Point is that asses aren’t dumb, they’re just stubborn. But this joke has a central pun and that is the word “asinine” which means ridiculously stupid.
