What’s so funny about this? I confess that I have a male perspective on beauty parlors and hair salons, mostly informed by images from 1950’s television and old movies. The closest I’ve gotten is a couple of unisex haircutters, but that’s not really the same. I’m definitely more of a barbershop guy, which reminds me of a place in New York City called Astor Place Barbers, which a quick google search has just revealed is still in business as Astor Place Hair Stylists. I got to NY in the late 60’s and by then it was already in business for 20 years. Their haircuts were very cheap and utilitarian. Then, when the punk look became popular in the 70’s, everyone wanted to look like that. I never understood that and still don’t. But a beauty parlor’s a whole other thing. They are always depicted as places where women hang out under these machines that look like something out of a science fiction movie where the victim is going to get her brains sucke
