What’s so funny about this? This joke is relatively easy to understand as long as you know the one key word and that is “alchemist”. An alchemist is someone who performs alchemy, which is the forerunner, or predecessor to modern chemistry. Alchemists were very interested in converting base, common metals, such as lead into more precious metals such as gold. I mean why go to all the bother of digging a giant hole in the ground like a gold mine, working your butt off for just a few flecks of gold, if you could only find the magic formula to create gold in a laboratory, or what passed for a lab in the old days. The old alchemists never succeeded in making gold but their experiments did lay the ground work for all kinds of modern chemical knowledge about elements and such.
