What’s so funny about this? This joke reminds me of an old song that begins with a riddle, “If tin whistles are made of tin, what are fog horns made of?” The song is entitled, “Does your chewing gum lose its flavor on the bedpost overnight?. Of course, neither of these questions has a possible answer, and even if they did, who would care? The fun is in posing the questions. The same is true of today’s joke. It, like the other two examples, serves to highlight the inconsistency and irrationality of the English language, something I love to do and hopefully you do too.
