I wrote this song lyric in 1984 as a 21-year-old heartbroken young man. My first serious relationship had ended, my girlfriend having broken up with me a couple of months earlier. I was listening to three main albums at the time -- Infidels by Bob Dylan, Knife by Aztec Camera, and Goodbye Cruel World by Elvis Costello & the Attractions. Somehow, the angsty-ness of those albums prompted some anger in me about the break-up, although I never really was angry at my now ex-girlfriend. Our long distance romance really didn't have much of a chance. Anyway, the song is pretty much how I wrote it 40 years ago with a couple of minor tweaks. I used Suno, the AI song-generator, to get this version which I really like.
