Maya priests and nobles would cast precious objects, and sometimes human sacrifices, into its depths, believing the cenote to be a portal to the underworld. Archaeological excavations have revealed a wealth of artifacts, including gold, jade, pottery, and human remains. .Ceremonies at the Sacred Cenote likely involved processions, prayers, and the burning of copal incense. Offerings were cast into the waters, with priests and nobles possibly interpreting the manner in which objects sank as a form of divination.
