Stanier Black-Five’s sonic arts practice developed from her DJing in the London experimental, industrial and techno scenes in the 1990s. Performing under the name, Autaxik J, her sets often employed multiple turntables, sound effects, modified vinyl and lockgrooves, mixing beats with noise and more abstract sound elements. She went on to replace records with her own recordings, which form the basis of her work today.
This “Train Set” takes its inspiration from those early days, featuring classic industrial techno from seminal labels such as PCP, Praxis and Industrial Strength and a noise and experimental element from Merzbow and Nurse With Wound. It also draws on the even earlier influence of a childhood spent listening to train records. This time however, most of the trains that run through this set are her own recent field recordings.
