From New York, the greatest city in the world, it's The Update with Brandon Julien! Even though crime in the city has been going down, violence still lurks around every corner. And even in 2018, it can deliver scenarios that will shock you. Like today's lead off story.

Some stories talked about on tonight's show were:

1. A man is in police custody after allegedly knocking a mother unconscious right in front of her 4-year-old son. Police said Derrick Chirse, of Brooklyn, faces several charges after a 35-year-old mother was punched in the face, head, chest and back in front of her child yesterday.

2. A prosecutor says three men hatched a scheme to exploit blue-chip college basketball recruits for profit by showering their families with cash.

3. An animal welfare group has brought a legal action against the Bronx Zoo on behalf of an elephant named Happy who was separated from the zoo's two other elephants after they fatally injured her mate.
