Before her first live performance in Seoul, I got the chance to talk with Memphis singer-songwriter Julien Baker. This was easily the longest interview that I've done, as we talked for about an hour in total, but also maybe the most profound. Currently touring in support of her second solo record, she spoke openly about how music serves as an outlet to process questions regarding faith, mental health, and relationships. But the music has also taught her acceptance and humility, while having the opportunity to collaborate with other amazing artists, including Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers, who make up the trio Boygenius, along with Baker. The 23-year-old guitarist and singer continued to be insightful as we talked about female empowerment in music, hardcore bands, confronting the darkness, controlling the ego, Bob's Burgers, Dunkin Donuts, "bougie" smoothies, and gas stations.
