In our societies, social class is all-pervasive but hard to see and impossible to touch. This month on Socbites, those of who study class and those of us who sing about it come together to explore its force and meaning. We compare Cardi B’s entrepreneurial optimism to Dolly Parton’s pessimism about social mobility. Britpop band Pulp warns us about class tourists and voyeurs and we probe the issue of consuming music meant for people other than ourselves. Then Dr. Anna Bull from the University of Portsmouth joins us to talk about her research on middle class culture and classical music performance. Finally, we ask if love conquers all, even the deepest of class differences.
