Why DJ?

I have been DJing in one form or another since I was 13. Yeah, I'm old, lol! I remember watching our hometown DJ back in the days in North Carolina named DJ Master Dee (for some reason all the DJs would use "Master" or "Lord" in their names) at our school dances. I thought he was the epitome of "cool". Well dressed, charismatic, and his mixes and blends were, to use some slang from the time, FRESH TO DEF! I was a shortie shortie, and the only equipment I had to practice with, were my mother's records and her stereo. I used to get some serious scoldings for "scratching up my good records"!

When I finally got to high school, lo and behold, our school had its own radio station. WHYC 88.5FM! Ran by student DJs and the General Manager, Ms. Potts. I signed up in 7th grade, and by the time I was a senior, I was a formidable force on the 1's and 2's, and had one of the corniest names for a DJ ever: Dr. Rapp, lol. Because not only did I spin, I could also spit, and we had many impromptu freestyle sessions over instrumentals on our Wednesday night show from 4pm - 9pm. 3 or 4 of us, bringing our 12" records to school to drop the latest joints on the whole county. Plus we ran the Dedication Line during the last hour playing slow jams and love songs (man, talk about DRAMA at school the next day).

So, when people ask me: Why DJ? For me, it's a love of music, sharing it, feeding off the positive energy and euphoria of the crowd, and yeah, making some money! I absolutely love spinning, not too crazy about the business side of it though, because it can work your nerves to the last! However, if life and our economy would permit it, lol, it's ALL I'd do.
