I Refuse is a short radio play and film by Rachel Margetts. Amateur voice actors re-perform a fictionalised interview, set against a backdrop of distant sounds: turning pages, birdsong, and typing on a computer keyboard. Navigating an ambiguous line between fiction and reality, I Refuse uncovers contradictions in public discourses about work during the pandemic.
The interviewer and the workers paradoxically seek connection through their opposing views on themes like solidarity, autonomy, and the refusal to work. The unreliable interviewer attempts to weave a narrative of unity, while the workers challenge problematic impositions of solidarity. Their intertwining narratives run in parallel, reflecting both their opposition and shared vulnerability.
